Losses, Garbage and Scrappers

The following is a slide show of some of the loss my parents endured. The pictures are not in any order. Some of the pictures with the two washers, dryer, stove, full size refrigerator, TV, small refrigerator etc. were taken before the scavengers/scrappers came by, some pictures were after we lost the dumpster that was in the front yard.

The Console Stereo & Grandma's Cedar Hope Chest

For us grown-up kids and for my 18 year old son and 19 year-old niece, the console stereo was in our family our entire lives. Grandma's cedar hope chest, was also a sad loss.

Holiday Decorations

My first thought when my father said the basement was flooded was my mother's Holiday Decorations. There were so many boxes in the basement, all neatly organized, packed nicely in bins. My father just had surgery and each bin was packed. He said that was the worst thing of the whole thing, to see the things my mother collected for over 60 years floating out of the bins, or the bins upside down floating in the basement. Many things were completely ruined and contaminated and thrown out immediately because of the waste on it.

Tuesday - September 16, 2008 -
Basement - Water is receding, bins and possessions floating in the stairwell.

I will eventually put whatever pictures I have of the decorations online, but right now, it's a bit too hard.

Everyone knows how to find my parents home by the decorations. Even when my parent's lived in Calumet City, they were known because of the decorations on the window.

My mom decorated both bathrooms, the living room, family room, dining room, the outside windows, kitchen, pretty much every room for every single holiday.

In January there is the snowmen, snowflakes, from towels to knick-knacks, window stickers, rugs, blankets, dolls, she did the same for Valentines, St. Patrick's Day, Memorial/Fourth of July/Veteran's Day, Easter, she had the Smiley Face Holiday (for when no big holiday's were around, there was Apple/ABC/123's for Back to School, then Leaves, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas then back to Snowmen in January. I know many people decorate but this was more than just decorating to my mom, this was her hobby, this is what she lived for, holiday's and decorating.

The loss of these items, and the personal items like my mom's graduation certificate, and personal documents were very hard on the family.

Scrappers came by and asked to take certain things, like washers, dryer, refrigerator, freezer, etc. and stated they were donating part of the proceeds to Red Cross. I pray they do just that. I do understand that this is their living, and these items were no good to any of us any longer. There were cases of people coming up onto the lawn and into driveways and yards to take things, that the owners were hoping to salvage.

NIPSCO, the Town of Munster, Police, Fire Department, homeowners and legitimate garbage companies needed to get down the street to drop off and pick up dumpster. Most streets were so packed, and I think the gawkers and the scrappers really should have backed off a bit, and been a bit more courteous of those dealing with their losses.

Video's of Aftermatth

The following are YouTube productions I found at http://www.youtube.com/user/danwilnot of the area after the Flood. My family and I have been very busy so we haven't had the time, the energy to take a lot of pictures or any video's but some this will show you some of the scenes we in the area. I believe it shows the block that had the house blow up and all the houses that were damaged around it.

Just a little of the destruction above.

This next video will show you the Tanning Salon in a little shopping mall 2 blocks from my parent's home.

Munster Flood, September 16, 2008

Tuesday - After the flood

It's Tuesday around Noon, after the flood, the water crested and it's slowly receding in some areas. My parents, Dan & Jen got a few blocks from the house and they dropped a little red boat in the water and Dad & Dan rowed to find out the fate of the house.

The water had reached the ceiling in the basement and the fear was it would overtake the main level. We are so grateful and happy to say the main floor was spared.

These pictures were partially taken by my father when him and Dan went to the house and Jen also took some of the photographs, while they were waiting for my Dad and Danny to come back from checking on the house.

Munster Flood Series - House Explodes

MUNSTER | A gas explosion obliterated an evacuated home Wednesday night on Munster's deluged north side, shaking the region with a resounding thump heard miles away.

"It was like a massive Roman candle," neighborhood resident and witness Mark Steinken said.

"You could feel the shock wave," he said.

Firefighters found no one hurt in or near the flattened, burning pile of timbers that remained of the house in the 7900 block of Monroe Street after the blast about 7:20 p.m., Town Manager Thomas DeGiulio said. That home's occupant was accounted for after the explosion, DeGiulio said.

The explosion lit fire to two neighboring homes, both also empty because of the mandatory evacuation in the neighborhood just south of the Little Calumet River, DeGiulio said.

NIPSCO crews cut gas to many homes after the river spilled 3 feet of water into the neighborhood over the weekend, DeGiulio said. But gas continued to flow to some houses.

"They can't get to the gas. They can't find the meters because they're so deep underwater," DeGiulio said.

NIPSCO workers and firefighters were cutting off gas and power to many neighborhood homes after the explosion, DeGiulio said.

"This only reinforces why we don't want people going back into these houses," DeGiulio said.

DeGiulio was waiting in Munster Town Hall for a phone call with homeland security officials when the home blew, he said.

"It shook the building," DeGiulio said.

The echoing blast brought neighbors streaming out of homes and businesses, and the fire, emergency response and cleanup turned into a neighborhood event. Hundreds of people gathered at Broadmoor Avenue and Monroe Street to watch firefighters wade into 3 feet of water. The closest firetruck only could pull within 600 feet of the house, so firefighters hooked three 200 foot hoses together, a fireman said.

"I live over on Hohman, and it rocked my house," Eric Bohling said.

Steinken described a "sickening feeling" after he heard the explosion and saw a mushroom cloud of burning wood rising above the trees. Residents are weary.

"This has been one misery after the other," Steinken said.

Jim Flener, a neighbor to the exploded home, felt power and gas should have been cut to all homes before the blast.

"It could have been me down there," he said.

A NIPSCO spokesman said late Wednesday that crews are investigating, but he could not comment specifically on the circumstances surrounding the blast.

Hammond Clinic is shown, which is near Target, Wendy's Taco Bell, Munster Med-Inn.
Behind Target is a little strip mall which is shown above in an aftermath video.

To see all the cars in the parking lot, with the oil and gas floating in the water is unreal.

There are some very interesting photographs of the The Borman Expressway, a part of 80/94.

When it re-opened there were people saying it was the best day since the Sox won the World Series! My family did not find that amusing, but then again they are Cub fans.

They show Lansing Airport, which is a few blocks from my home; that was just rain water flooding, not a river or a creek.

Munster Flood Series, September 15, 2008 - Time to Leave

In this video, Jack brought my mother back to the house in an inflatable boat. Later Danny & Jack came back to get some important documents from the house to keep them safe. My father took video's of each room because they did not know if the top floor would be flooded or not.

At the end of this video you can see the little boat that was used to bring my mother back home.

When my Dad pans to the corner you can see near the stop sign (kitty corner) the white house of Ms. Demar who's home was condemned on Thursday. It was extremely sad. She was given until Dusk to get what she could out of the house, and told she could not get the rest out. She was the only person allowed in her home. The foundation had buckled and there was a sink hole.

The water level kept rising and started climbing up closer to the kitchen when my parents had no choice but to leave, they had to call in and ask for a boat to come and get them.

A Note on Ginger: My parents had Ginger evacuated by boat and Jack's girlfriend Jenny brought her into Munster Animal Hospital and had Ginger boarded. Dan & Jen picked up Ginger and took her to live with them, Daisy, Molly & Freehley and now she's back home with my parents and seems to be getting acclimated to being home again.

Munster Flood Series, September 15, 2008 - Basement

Video #7

The water is seeping into the back door and traveling down the stairs into the basement. The water here is now less than a foot from the ceiling and the light was still on. Eventually the water was completely up the stairs, covering the ceiling light that you see down there, the landing was full and it started to approach the stairs that leads up to the kitchen.

Munster Flood Series, September 15, 2008 Garage & Backyard video!

Video #6

This is video of the garage and the backyard as the water is still rushing in through the levee and rising. This is early am on Monday, before my mother got there.

Munster Flood Series, September 15, 2008

Video #5
Early Monday Morning

Very early Monday Morning. Mark walked over to check on my Dad while he is on the phone and you can hear the disappointment and despair in his voice. The houses across the street lost power, or the power was shut off, not quite sure because my parents did not lose power until sometime early Friday morning or late Thursday evening. My parent's neighbor Andre had only 2 inches for most of the time but there was 3 sump pumps running and it became a losing battle when the water starting flowing into his home.

At this time, I believe the water was over the washer and dryer and all my mother's decoration bins were floating. The electricity and gas was still on.

Munster Flood Series, September 14, 2008 - Wind Chimes

Video #4

The River has breached the Levee, the rain is ending and evacuations by boat has started. You will see the water has not reached the stairs and grass is still peaking through. It's so strange to see Mark & Lori's driveway. It's become a big marker in this whole ordeal.

Jack had walked over to my parents house in chest high water twice that day. Once he came to pick up the overnight bag, which was left in my parent's car in the garage (which was still dry at this time) and one more time to check on my father.

It's eerie to hear my Mother's wind chimes on the house, and see that this is just a few hours after my father's first video!

Munster Flood Series, September 14, 2008 - River Starting to breach Levee

Video #3

The River has breached the levee, but the water is just starting to flow in. At this time my parents basement is still dry and you can start to see movement. The street is at a much lower level than my parents home and the garage is even up on higher level. I had just called my father at this point to find out where he was, as he was suppose to be at my house by now.

At the showing of the first video, my father's car still would not have made it out of the neighborhood because of the water level in the street.

Munster Flood Series, September 14, 2008 Video #2 - During da Bears!

Video #2

It's raining a bit harder, but the River has not overflowed it's banks on the block yet, though the levees were breached all around. Mark, my parent's next door neighbor neighbor was standing in front of our house with my Dad.

L
istening to the South Chicago Dialect of my family, friends and well I guess I sound this way too, is amusing even in times like these.

In the midst of a disaster in the making, "da Bears" is still important.

My father and Mark, actually may have had a clue how devastating things would eventually
become and now I believe that is why my father decided to not come to my parents and placed himself conveniently "stuck" in the house.

Mark "I can't believe this sh*t. Unreal.......... You watchin' da Bears?
My Dad "Yeah"
Mark "Is it 17-3 still?
My Dad "6"

A neighbor across the street screams they should get a boat and then said again, the neighbors should pitch in to buy a boat.

You can see the water rising and getting closer.

Munster Flood Series - September 14, 2008

Video #1
Before noon

This is the very first in the Video series my Father took, I will be linking more information and making corrections along the way.

In the prior video link from NWI.com, you can see the neighbor's driveway has taken on a little bit more water since she left with her SUV.

It has rained now several days my father dropped my mother off and went back home. We all know he isn't fond of leaving the home as it is, and he wasn't ready to give up just yet and was probably hoping the rain would stop. Also, it was Sunday and da Bears was on!

We had been through many floods in our life, but this area had not flooded like this and they weren't even required to have Flood Insurance.

The Army Corp of Engineers were suppose to have been working on the Levee Project which started 28 years prior.

My brother was on forced evacuation the day before and decided to come back and look around and check on his house and he took some pictures.

These pictures were before the River came over the levee as he was driving on Calumet Avenue. You cannot see it but to the left is the Taco Bell and Target.

The street is just rain water and sewers are filled up. The River has not come over the levee yet and it's still raining quite hard.

Flood Map

This map, I hope will come in handy for people to see where things are if they haven't been around in a while. My parents home is East of Target. Target's parking lot attaches to Munster Med-Inn, Hammond Clinic, there's a Taco Bell that was shown in many News Casts, along with a Wendy's.

You can see the Little Calumet River snaking from West to East.

I will be putting up information regarding the explosion which happened and I marked that with an X.

Munster is South of the Little Cal. and Hammond is located North. The Borman Expressway - 80/94 was closed down and is prominently displayed North of the River.

Flood Series

The first in the series of of the Flood.

In this NWI video, my parent's next door neighbor Lori is leaving at time stamp 2:49 in the video. It's early am on Sunday. In editing of the news video it seems they mixed the timing up a bit, but you get the gist of it.

As Lori pulls out of the driveway you can see the corner of my parents house to the right of Lori's driveway.

Lori and Mark's driveway will be shown a lot in the video's that will follow. It is a good reference point. Andre is my parent's neighbor on the left, and you can see the sump pump hose outside and see how the rain, river, and muck finally cover it completely.

I would like to thank Lori, Mark and Andre for the love and friendship and kindness they have shown my family throughout this entire trying time.

NOTE:
*ANDRE'S HOUSE IS NOT SHOWN IN THIS VIDEO, HIS HOUSE IS TO THE LEFT OF MY PARENTS.
*MS. DEMAR IN THIS VIDEO, IS IN FRONT OF HER HOME (WHITE HOUSE), IN A PAIR OF SHORTS AND AT THE TIME THE WATER IS KNEE HIGH. LITTLE DID SHE KNOW DURING THE FILIMING OF THIS HER HOUSE WOULD END UP BEING CONDEMNED. MY FAMILY'S THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH HER. SHE WAS GIVEN UNTIL DUSK ON WEDNESDAY TO GO INTO HER HOME ALONE, AND GRAB WHAT SHE COULD AND THEN THE HOUSE WAS CONDEMNED.

Tornado Pictures

The Tornado was loud and quick. It was a long night and a scary night, and they could hear things hitting the house. Luckily it was mostly tree damage. They did suffer some house damage, and their basement flooded due to the loss of electricity.

My parent's new neighbor, Andre next door had a crew come by and climb on my parents roof and take down the trees that were up there, and they cut down all the tree limbs in the back yard and the front yard and they raked. Andre has been a wonderful new neighbor and they are very grateful for his kindness. Also, Mark and Lori the neighbors to the left of them have been very helpful and kind to my parents.

The neighbor two doors down from my parents in the house with the black trim had extensive basement flooding damage after the Tornado and just had her basement finished. My parents got a few inches, but no structural damage during the Tornado of 08'.

Many homes in this area had roof damage, car damage, window damage and basement damage because of the Tornado. The loss of power forced many people to have to replace everything in their freezers, refrigerators after this tornado.

Most people in this area of Munster are blue collar workers, retired and on a fixed income. Having the power shut off, when it's hot for such a lengthy period of time, and not wanting to leave the house because you have to worry about vandals is also a concern. My parents lucked out though that nobody was hurt.

June 2008 Tornado hits Munster, Indiana

On June 7, 2008 a tornado whipped through Illinois and Indiana another whipped through on August 4th, 2008 and my parents were affected by that tornado.

The following is a YouTube production to show you the Tornado that did eventually whip past my parent's home.

Pictures will follow.
