The Tornado was loud and quick. It was a long night and a scary night, and they could hear things hitting the house. Luckily it was mostly tree damage. They did suffer some house damage, and their basement flooded due to the loss of electricity.
My parent's new neighbor, Andre next door had a crew come by and climb on my parents roof and take down the trees that were up there, and they cut down all the tree limbs in the back yard and the front yard and they raked. Andre has been a wonderful new neighbor and they are very grateful for his kindness. Also, Mark and Lori the neighbors to the left of them have been very helpful and kind to my parents.
The neighbor two doors down from my parents in the house with the black trim had extensive basement flooding damage after the Tornado and just had her basement finished. My parents got a few inches, but no structural damage during the Tornado of 08'.
Many homes in this area had roof damage, car damage, window damage and basement damage because of the Tornado. The loss of power forced many people to have to replace everything in their freezers, refrigerators after this tornado.
Most people in this area of Munster are blue collar workers, retired and on a fixed income. Having the power shut off, when it's hot for such a lengthy period of time, and not wanting to leave the house because you have to worry about vandals is also a concern. My parents lucked out though that nobody was hurt.
